PM Narendra Modi visits Canada, marking it as a beginning of his three nation tour. This is his first foreign visit after Operation Sindoor. The current Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney had sent an invitation to PM Modi. Will this invitation mark the end of all tensions between these two countries? How being a part of G7 is beneficial for India? Let’s see in detail:

India Canada Relationship

During 2023 and 2024, ties between India and Canada deteriorated after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau blamed India for the murder of a Canadian Sikh separatist. India vehemently denied the charges, terming them as unfounded, and retaliated by expelling the Canadian diplomats. As a result, the visa services were suspended temporarily, further exacerbating diplomatic relations.

But in 2025, rebuilding is in the works. The June visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Canada is a sign of a big diplomatic reset, with major points of discussion including trade, energy cooperation, deepening people-to-people contacts, and reaching out to the Indian diaspora.

G7

G7 is the group of 7, founded in 1975. Originally, it was G6 which had only six members. Later, in 1976, Canada joined it , making it G7. The current member states are: Canada, United Kingdom, United States, France, Germany, Italy, Japan (also European Union which participates as a non-enumerated member).

India’s membership would balance power both domestically and internationally, particularly as China’s influence increases.

5. Investment & Trade Boost

G7 membership would provide investor confidence and could spur FDI, technology transfer, and access to essential infrastructure support (energy, green tech, etc.).

Can India be part of G7?

Yes, India can be part of G7, as :

  1. India is now 5th largest economy in the world and it aims to be the 3rd largest by the year 2030.
  2. India is already a “de facto” global influencer — joining G7 would formalize that.

What being a part of G7 will cost to India?

  2. There can be some foreign policy challenges, like India might have to pick a side, which it always avoids.
  3. India has to often involves funding development programs, aid packages, and climate goals; these problem India still faces in its home.

Conclusion

Yes, India can join G7, but after evaluating the cost of influence versus the freedom of neutrality. Well, India always take strategic choice. There are more chances of India working as a dialogue partner than being part of it as a member state.
